"Before Oklahoma became a state, the area was simply referred to as 'Indian Territory'. I tried to tap into that Indian heritage for the look and feel of some of the themes of this show. I wanted the audience to hear Native American singing as they entered the theatre. I kept trying to counsel the cast to think about how hard it must have been for these white pioneers in this new place and even harder for the Native people they were displacing. They would have been tough and gritty, so gone were any notions of pastel smiling, clean cut cowboys and frontier girls. Even the character of Laurie was a tough, tomboyish farm girl, not a blushing coquette. I even wanted this feel to crossover into the marketing photos I created for the show." - Geoff Short
