Director's Note
I remember driving away from college in Ohio in my twenties with a band in a truck overpacked with instruments and amplifiers and dreams of being rock stars on our way to California. I remember driving alone to move to Florida in my forties to start a new chapter in my life after the end of a marriage. There were many journeys in between. Of course these are personal and specific things in my life, but after first seeing a college production of See Rock city and Other Destinations in Cleveland in 2010 I’ve always thought that what this show does so well is take personal experiences like mine (and yours) and makes them universal so that many people can then find their own personal connections to it. I think that personal-to-universal-to-personal circle is the essence of what makes any art so powerful. These short stories tied together with the theme of travel to well known tourist destinations and the amazing music they’re built on speak to any of us who have ever explored or searched or loved or lost in our lives. And the places these things happen in are the important backdrops of so many milestones that make us who we are. That's the heart of See Rock City and Other Destinations. I know this cast of amazing story tellers will take you on a journey of finding your own personal connection with these stories and we hope they move you as they have us. |
Thanks so much to everyone in the SRC family and Evening Star Productions, especially Rosalie Grant for producing so much live theatre and for the vision and courage to stage pieces like this. Thanks also to Caryl Fantel for starting us on our musical journey and to Anthony Campisi for getting us to our destination. But most of all thank you for taking a trip with us to See Rock City and Other Destinations. Bon Voyage!
With Love and Thanks, Geoff Short |

set & lighting design
"With a stylish, white backdrop with skeletons of luggage in every size and shape, co-designers Geoffrey Short (also the director) and Ardean Landhuis and scenic artist Kate McVay have created a chic, blank canvas that each story, dream and vignette can spring from."

In designing the set and lights for See Rock City, I wanted as blank of a canvas as possible to be flexible enough to become the many different locales in the story without actually getting mired in actual set changes. The stationary wave-like scenic flats could become rolling hills along a highway, or waves on an ocean. The all white set allowed us to change scenes with light as opposed to actual set pieces. The emptiness of the shells of suitcases - all stripped down and taken apart on the back wall reminded me of how sometimes our lives are stripped apart, of how we sometimes need to fill up our lives with...something. There's a longing and searching about them that I think really made a nice backdrop for these stories of travel and searching.
